Biography

This highly successful operatic artist, who is known for her "golden streaming mezzo-soprano, her effortless upper-register and well projected chest voice" (Berliner Rundschau) has been a guest at all of Europe and South America's leading opera houses: the Bavarian State Opera, Munich; La Scala in Milan; the Dresden Semper Opera; Staatsoper Hamburg; Paris; Barcelona; Torino; Rome; Parma; the Teatro Felice Genua, London, Bath; Bologna; Naples; Catania; Valencia; Bilbao; Bogota; Tokio; Taipei; Prinzregententheater München; Cologne; Mannheim; Deutsche Oper Berlin; Komische Oper Berlin; Wiesbaden; Dublin; Athens; Amsterdam, inter alia. Camilla Ueberschaer has regularly appeared under the baton of the world's leading conductors, and along side the greatest operatic singers. Her conductors and directors have included: Wolfgang Sawallisch, Riccardo Chailly, Giuseppe Sinnopoli, Jun Märkl, Christian Thielemann, Semyon Bychkov, Jiri Kout, Yakov Kreizberg, Gary Bertini, Marek Janowsky, Roberto Abbado, Stefan Soltesz, Cesare Lievi, and netxt to Jeannine Altmeyer, Hildegard Behrens, Rita Gorr, Sabine Hass, Barbara Hendricks, Marjana Lipovsek, Christa Ludwig, Noemi Nadelmann, Deborah Polaski, Gabriele Schnaut, Cheryll Studer, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Simon Estes, Robert Hale, Matthias Hölle, Siegfried Jerusalem, Rene Kollo, William Lewis, Donald McIntyre, Alfred Muff, Matti Salminen, Heikki Syokola, Robert Schunck, Hans Wallat et al.

A voice student of Professor Harry Gottschalk, while at the College of Arts in Berlin the mezzo-soprano also studied musicology, german language and literature studies, philosophy and sacred music. During this period she also took part in master-studies with Hertha Töpper, Mario del Monaco and Josef Metternich. Ms. Ueberschaer begin her professional career in the opera companies of Trier and Darmstadt; since then as a free lance artist, she has developed a wide ranging repertoire, at the core of which stand the works of RICHARD WAGNER, RICHARD STRAUSS and, increasingly, the works of CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS.

Her most important roles include: Fricka (DAS RHEINGOLD, DIE WALKÜRE), Waltraute (DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG), 1th Norn and 2th Norn (DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG), Flosshilde, Wellgunde (DAS RHEINGOLD, DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG), Herodias (SALOME), Auntie (PETER GRIMES), La zia Principessa / Fürstin (SUOR ANGELICA), Marcellina / Marzelline (FIGAROS HOCHZEIT), 3. Dame (ZAUBERFLÖTE), Frau Reich (DIE LUSTIGEN WEIBER VON WINDSOR), 1. Magd, 2. Magd (ELEKTRA), Zita (GIANNI SCHICCHI) and Jezibaba / Hexe (RUSALKA) as well as characters in such 20th Century composers' works, as Alban BERG'S Margret (WOZZECK), Paul HINDEMITH'S Dame (CARDILLAC), Hans Werner HENZE'S (Begonia, DER JUNGE LORD), Othmar SCHOECK 'S Oberpriesterin (PENTHESILEA) and Flavio TESTI'S Cecilia (RICCARDO III.).

Ms. Ueberschaer has been featured in the Munich Opera Festival in Britten's PETER GRIMES, in the Festival Baden-Baden, in the Berlin Festival Weeks, the Richard Strauss Festival in Dresden, in Wiesbaden's International May Festival, in the Bregenz Festival, the Bruckner Festival in Linz, the Bad Hersfelder Festival, in the Holland Festival, Covent Garden Festival London, Bath International Music Festival and the Taormina Arts Festival, as well as the Tollwood Festival and the Munich Biennale; and, she has participated in the premiere of works by such important contemporary composers as BAWDON, GRÜNAUER, HELMSCHROTT, LEYENDECKER, KINGSLEY, PRESTELE and SCHÖBACH.

In addition to her active operatic career, Ms. Ueberschaer's work in the field of sacred concert music is much in demand. Her sacred repertoire - particularly featuring BACH, MOZART and DVORAK - has led to international accolades, not least the praise of the Mannheimer Morgen who especcially lauded her ability to sing "with noteworthy expressiveness, and nevertheless with the required restraint" critical in this difficult oevre and all too rare in a dramtic operatic voice. Further vocal priortities are the music of MAHLER, ZEMLINSKY, SCHREKER and KORNGOLD.

When not travelling, Ms. Ueberschaer may be regularly seen in the justly famous productions of Nuernberg's Pocket Opera Company. There, she has appeared as Fricka and Flosshilde in Wagner's THE RING OF THE NIBELUNGEN, as Carmencita (a Pocket Opera revision of Bizet's most famous work (CARMEN) of Anton PRESTELE.

Reflecting upon her excellent artistry and beautiful voice, Ms. Ueberschaer has been invited to appear in radio broadcast performances of the SWF Orchestra Baden-Baden (SCHÖNBERG), the Hessen Radio Symphony Orchestra (SCHNEBEL), The Stuttgart Radio Symphony, Radio France, NHK Tokyo, SFB Berlin (MEDEK, ZEMLINSKY) and the RAI Turin, among others.

The mezzo-soprano's first CD, made in 1995 features Lieder of PETER SCHÖBACH ("Sassi") and in 1998 she published the CD "Re-Visionen" (see discography) with Camilla Ueberschaer is singing the "Wagner-Idyll" of Dieter Schnebel.

In 1999 her Masterclass at the famous "Stage School of Music, Dance and Drama" in Hamburg was a great success. She founded the "VOICE-STUDIO MÜNCHEN", where she teaches based on the swedish-italian school of singing by David Jones, New York.

In 2008 Camilla Uebershaer sung the 3. Dame in Mozarts ZAUBERFLÖTE at the "Internationale Sommerphilharmonie Leoben 2008" / Austria and the part of the Contralto in the world premiere of the 3. Symphonie "Chinesische Jahreszeiten" for Contralto, Sh'ng and Orchestra by Enjott SCHNEIDER at the "classicfestival leoben" / Austria 24.7.2008.

On Janary 8 2010 she sung the world premiere of the lieder cycle "Traummeere" ("Dream-Seas") by Peter Schöbach, broadcasted on Bayrischer Rundfunk.
